Only those with deep and abundant roots of goodness can stay at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas. Other people have no way to stay. With such a fine environment for cultivation, we should certainly work hard to cultivate the Way. We must endure suffering and toil, and take on the great responsibility of propagating the Buddha's teachings to influence people to change their evil ways and become good. This is the mission of all Buddhists, and we must approach it with an indomitable spirit.

Some people who lack sufficient virtue and good roots come to the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas and engage in idle thinking all day long. When the tests become too much for them to handle, they change their minds and leave this pure place. The City of Ten Thousand Buddhas is a Way-place where the wheel of Proper Dharma is turned in the West. People here cannot slack off in their cultivation even for a day. When those not seeking the truth come here, they feel as if they were sitting on pins and needles. Different people have different feelings about the same place; this is due to the varying depth of their good roots.

Some people diligently apply themselves to translating the Sutras all day long, not hoping for fame or profit.
