A sanctuary where living beings of the Dharma Realm can take refuge
In the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas, ten thousand Buddhas are born.

Ten thousand miles of bright light shines from the lamps of ten thousand households.

With one mind ten thousand generations do the great work

that will last ten thousand generations.

Ten thousand nations together admire the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas.

At the entrance to the City, the Mountain Gate with its three arches was constructed in 1980. Glazed yellow roof tiles and red brick walls were distinctive features of the gate.
The City of Ten Thousand Buddhas is a wellspring from which Buddhism flows into the world; it is also a place to which Buddhism throughout the world returns. As the Avatamsaka Sutra says:
There is nothing that does not flow forth from the Dharma Realm,

And nothing that does not return to the Dharma Realm.

The City of Ten Thousand Buddhas is a sanctuary for the followers of all the world's religions. Buddhists, Hindus, Christians, Muslims, Jews and others are all welcome. Everybody is free to come and free to leave as he or she pleases; the doors of the City are always open.
